The IET has published a draft of the 5th edition of the IET’s Code of Practice In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment for public comment
We’re encouraging electrical safety professionals, like you, to respond to the draft and have your say on the future of safety testing guidance before 13th September 2019.
The code is intended to advise duty-holders on in-service inspection and testing to determine whether electrical equipment is fit for continued service, or if maintenance or replacement is necessary.
Seaward’s category manager for our test and measurement product range, Kevin Smith, is part of the committee who has developed the new draft, representing the views of the PAT testing industry.
He said: “Like the people who use our products, keeping people safe is our number one priority. The Code is vital for the development and protection of our industry, but it only works if that the entire industry has its say and that your views and experiences as duty-holders and testers are represented.”
What’s are the proposed changes from the 4th Edition?
New sections proposed for the 5th Code of Practice include:
- Class II FE (ITE) equipment (Section 6)
- New requirements for 13 A plugs and associated flexes (Section 10)

- A guide to basic electrical theory to assist trainers and others learning how to inspect and test electrical equipment
You can read the full draft and submit your feedback via the IET website.
